A lot of my day to day work involves working with client which is what I like; I get to have face to face (even if on MS Teams) contact with some very interesting people where I can apply what I have learnt, which is such valuable experience at 18 years old.
Tax was completely new to me when I started back in September 2022, so a lot of the concepts I have learned over the past 6 months or so are completely new to me. On top of this, a job like this does wonders for your social skills, which I do not think are talked about enough.
I thoroughly enjoy my programme. Compared to university, I think the lifestyle is very different. However I believe the life I lead right now, with a great social life in and outside of work hours, along with the professional experience I gain is fantastic and something that I would not change.
My programme is very well organised, split between working in the office/with clients, to training courses/college studying towards my ACA ICAEW professional accounting qualification - there is a great system within the company to get support from your manager if you are feeling a bit lost.
As mentioned previously, I feel I receive ample support from my employer, whether that is on the apprenticeship side of things, how my progression is looking within my qualification - or whether this is from a professional perspective.
My training provider is incredibly supportive, they have a website with videos which are all recorded walking you through the syllabus of the exam which you are due to take, and we have an apprenticeship coach and a private tutor who are always happy to take questions whenever you need.
I can apply things that I learn in my professional qualification to my professional work, to work with my clients, especially from the tax side but even if not tax related, having some general awareness surrounding the field which we are working on is always a great help and makes you feel accomplished.
There are many activities to get involved in both in and out of work hours, whether that is a lunch with your team at lunch time, or whether it is going for drinks with colleagues after work on a Friday, even to more formal more organised events with the team - I love the social side!
Yes
I would 100% recommend EY to any friend. My favourite part of the job is the people - I have a great working relationship with all the people I work with - and it did not take long for me to stop thinking of myself as a new joiner.
My biggest advice would be to always think about the first impression you are making! You have a lot of time to prepare for the interview with the partner/senior manager who will talk with you - so research them and research the company! Show off that you know about our corporate responsibility (charity) or environmental targets, and explain how your morals align with EY values and why this makes you suitable for the role.
