My role is a site based trainee quantity surveyor and my day to day responsibilities include reviewing and assessing subcontractor applications for payment, subcontractor payments, raising requisitions, tracking the costs for plant materials and equipment on a project, setting up subcontracts, pricing compensation events, issuing instructions and ensuring I comply with what is set out in the contract for the project.
Since joining I have learnt many valuable skills that are not only applicable to my job but outside also. Some of these would include improving my IT skills using various softwares, greater understanding about how contracts are set up, working with a team as well as a greater understanding of construction practices.
I really enjoy the programme I am on. So far it has been an amazing experience where I have been supported from the start and have provided many opportunities for learning new skills and development. I enjoy my role, the people I work with as well as working for Balfour Beatty.
From the start it has been well organised, supportive and full of opportunities. There have been both structured activities/learning sessions organised by the early careers team, as well as if I felt I needed extra help or was more interested in a particular topic, effort was made to cater to those requests.
Everybody I have met has been supportive with helping me settle into my role and if there has been any issues there was always somebody to turn to. They aim to provide you support with everything you do and the line managers go out of their way to support you.
My training provider is easy to reach and there are many outlets where help or support can be found. There has been many opportunities to develop and take part in things that help with progress and gaining the qualification I am working towards. Overall it has been a supportive process.
The concepts about construction learnt through my qualification provider have helped with having a greater understanding for what is involved in the projects I work on. The knowledge learnt there has been applicable to my day to day activities and has helped create a good starting point to learn more from.
There are various events held that help with networking and improving your understanding of the company. Some include launch events, roadshows aswell as events held specifically your project team or part of the training programme where you meet others also on the programme from different projects. As well as this there are various sports teams to join.
Yes
As I have had such a positive experience with the company during my time here, I think it is a great place to work. The work environment is full of helpful and expert people who have been great to work with and there has been plenty of support provided through my whole time here.
Ask as many questions as you can and do not be afraid to get to know people. If you are ever struggling with anything reach out to anyone in your teams and they will definitely be able to help and lead you in the right direction. And if you want to develop on certain skills just ask an they will find a way to help you do that.
