  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It was a big change going from full-time sixth form education to full-time work. I struggled with applying college knowledge at first due to working in highways yet learning about buildings. Balfour are very invested in my training and education so are very helpful. I always have help.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Amazing! Balfour have launched a new early careers programme dedicated to providing training and experiences for apprentices and graduates. It is well planned and interactive. I have a calendar for all the associated events for the next two years.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • They have a dedicated early careers team which are there to help with any problems you may have. When I did not receive the grades I was predicted, they worked tirelessly to make sure I had a suitable course that would not stun my apprenticeship and would get my degree.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Due to not being on the same course as other Quantity Surveyors at Balfour, it is a bit different to what was planned however, my college works hard to ensure I receive a great standard of education even with a few bumps. There are monthly reviews to check how I am getting on.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Because I work in highways and the majority of Quantity Surveying courses are focused around construction of buildings and not roads it can be a little difficult to apply the knowledge I learn in lectures to my job. However, it encourages me to work harder to ensure I am making the most of what I learn.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are so many opportunities to go to additional training where you can network with other employees at Balfour. Included in my early careers programme are two residentials in the Lake District. There are also yearly Commercial away days where we have a day off work to socialise with other quantity surveyors.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are so invested in your training with a very good competitive salary. They help with the adjustment from school to work with hybrid working and a paced introduction to responsibility and training. They cover so many job roles so there is a job for everyone and a different levels as well, so everyone has an opportunity to join.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • Research your job role and the company so you have an understanding of the projects you could be working on and the work you are going to do. Ask questions as it shows you are interested and they are important for your decision to work there or not.
