I am a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, I have to manage subcontractors as they complete works and ensure they get paid the correct amount for the relevant works they have carried out. I have to ensure there are no issues regarding work, timescales and other subcontractors, making everything run smoothly.
Yes, I have no prior experience so everything I have learnt within the construction industry is new regarding surveying, I have also improved on my teamwork and communication skills, working with a team and communicating with different subcontractors.
I enjoy it, however feel like it could be structured and organised better to increase my learning opportunities and be able to get out on site more.
The programme itself is quite poorly structured, with no pathway or learning criteria or programme to follow, there is little guidance and this makes it hard to learn.
The support is relatively good, especially from my line manager who helps me, with both my work and university related work too.
The support is quite good, there are people I can easily speak to and get support from as well as giving me time at work to complete university assignments.
It gives me a wider understanding of the industry and allows me to learn about things, and then be able to apply them when I am actually at work.
Yes, there are social events and also networking events as part of the early careers events. These are often very fun activities, which I try to attend where possible.
Yes
They offer a decent level of support and give lots of learning opportunities. They allow me to be flexible when working and offer decent pay and a good programme.
Research the company and what it is Balfour Beatty do. Learn all about surveying and the building industry but they do not expect you to be an expert nonetheless. Be confident and show off your talents and abilities.
