My role involves lots of different areas of accounting. I do lots of bookkeeping including bank recs and reconciling nominal accounts.
During my apprenticeship I was learning so many new skills everyday, both to do with my role and my personal development. I have learnt so much about accounting and continue to learn more and more everyday, as well as building confidence, communication, time management, and organisation skills just to name a few.
From the very start my role has been very engaging with endless new things to learn and ways to challenge myself. Something else that made the Softcat apprenticeship scheme so enjoyable was starting with such a big group of other apprentices who were in the the same boat and there to help each other.
We had an in-depth induction when we first joined giving us the opportunity to really understand how the business works and what its values are. Our apprenticeship training sessions were put our diaries with lots of notice which was helpful when managing day to day responsibilities and the project at the end of our apprenticeship was well organised with lots of support.
Lots. My manager and team were always super helpful and willing to support in any way I need. The L andD team were always there to reach out to and starting with such a big group of people doing the same thing meant we always had each other to go to as well.
I am dyslexic and was able to receive lots of support from remit to help with this.
Doing a business administration apprenticeship was useful to help understand how the business as a whole operates and for connecting with other departments and understanding how they work. However, for me in finance the actual content of what we were learning did not often overlap with my day to day role.
There are always lots of things to get involved with at Softcat. I have been part of a couple of our networks such as the Pride network and the EDN (Empowering Disability and Neurodiversity) network and these have been incredible to be involved with. But there are so many other networks, hobby groups, sports and more to get involved with.
Yes
It has helped me massively in starting my career. The apprenticeship allows me to gain valuable experience in a field completely new to me and I have been able to learn so much quicker than I would taking a different route. It has also allowed me to work on many areas of personal development and meet lots of great people.
Be super authentically you and be open to getting involved in as many opportunities as possible. Their culture is such an important part of the business and is a big driver to why so many people love to work here. So make sure you are ready to be involved in all the fun stuff they could be available to you here.
