  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Visiting members' premises and pro-actively assisting them with all areas of Tachograph compliance, from drivers' hours to how to use digital equipment. Delivering one-on-one mentoring, presentations & training sessions.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I'm learning about how much our interpersonal skills have an impact on how other people feel, and how this can affect our ability to build professional relationships and upsell. It's been useful to be made aware, especially in such a diverse industry like transport, about different people's needs depending on age, culture, language ets.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I've been finding it useful and being able to apply it to day-to-day situations in my line of work is enabling me to be more confident, but also reflect on situations I did not handle so well and how I could handle the same situation better going forward. That said, the programme is very intense, and I am having to give up more of my free time than I thought to be able to complete it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Sometimes with the assignments the way it is worded can be rather vague, so sometimes I am unsure of whether it is I am doing what it is that I've been asked to do or answering the questions correctly. It would be useful if the research points could be clearer to enable us to plan better.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive two days per month on full pay purely for the purpose of carrying out the apprenticeship and related activities. I am also taking part in the company's mentoring/mentee scheme, and I have been paired with one of the directors who is an expert is customer service. I feel this is working really well and complementing the learning that my apprenticeship is offering me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There wasn't a particularly smooth set up with the personal tutor, which wasn't their fault due to someone leaving and the delegates being distributed amongst the ones who were left. The meeting that we have once per month I always feel are a little rushed, and work is not marked until right before the meeting the following month, so there isn't a lot of time for me to rectify work if I have misunderstood or omitted something.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have never considered myself a salesperson but through the skills that I am learning I am becoming more confident. I found the section on interpersonal skills, impact and likeability particularly useful as this has enabled me to become more confident in upselling, build better relationships and anyone can sell if they apply these techniques.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Not that I am aware of. However, I am finding the skills that I am learning I am applying outside of work and managing to build better relationships with other people, and improving my social life too.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Logistics UK to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • The course content is good, but you are very much left to your own devices and much of the apprenticeship is self-study without really any direction as to whether you are doing what is being asked of you correctly. They are often slow to reply to queries and if you work full-time it can be difficult to find a mutual time for meetings as the personal tutor is at full capacity with delegates.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Logistics UK?
  • You need to be very organised (one thing that I have learned and had to improve on). Instructions for assignments or projects tend to be quite vague so you have to be prepared to put the time in to go into as much detail as possible to ensure that you are doing what is being asked of you correctly.
