Cyber Security Analyst Review

I work in the first line SOC within BT, so that involves managing alerts that come in such as DDoS, managed SEIM and security incidents within BT. There is a range that I can be doing day to day from writing analysts, calling customers to ensure that everything is okay and ensuring that security incidents are on track to being fixed.

yes I have learnt lots of new skills so far both in university and in work. In university I have learnt programming skills and how to write written reports and essays which help me everyday in work. In work, I have learnt how to use all my resources in order to write detailed analysis' and have developed my skills of written communication.

I really enjoy my programme. The university lectures can sometimes not be as engaging and exciting due to them being online but so far I have found the topics interesting and looking at further topics, I am excited to learn them too. In work, I have a great team that I work with which has made it very enjoyable for me.

The programme in work is very well structured and I have been slowly getting more confident in work and more independent. I also have lots of opportunities to branch out and work on projects that I will enjoy and further my knowledge in cyber security. Sometimes the lectures can be quite slow, especially if there's a new tutor but it seems to improve after a few weeks.

I receive lots of support from my employer. My manager holds lots of one to one meetings with me which allows me to let her know how am getting on and what I need help with. They also allow me to take plenty of study time in work which allows me to ensure that my uni work is handed in on time and to a good standard.

apart from the lectures, they don't really provide much extra support. I can speak to the tutors weekly which has been helpful. However, they don't provide much extra resources. I do have access to the library on campus but as everything is now online, I live too far away to actually go and use it which is unhelpful.

So far, the 2 modules which I have completed have not really helped that much within my role however looking at future module, I think that they will be more helpful and more applicable in my workplace. However it does give me a lot of general cyber security knowledge which is useful.

There are a lot of extra activities in my workplace. They always have lots of events going on within the office and online which I have attended. These involve charity events and a football team which meets every week. They also have our own social media site which allows you to join different groups and meet new people.

Yes

because it is a very good company that has a strong focus on ensuring that you are continuously learning. Everyone is also very nice whether that's in my team or even at the coffee machine, there's always people open to a conversation. They also are a very inclusive and welcoming company which is nice to see.

Just be yourself during interviews, it's what they want to see. Don't be afraid to get involved in conversations and try to involve others too so everyone is included. BT are a very inclusive brand so try to show that too and just be confident in yourself and your own abilities.
