  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Contract management and project management. Including producing CVR reports, forecasting, writing of subcontracts, site visits, payments and attending meetings. Usually the majority of my day is spent forecasting and reviewing costs, as well as managing a large number of subcontractors. Multiple meetings a day help keep on top of tasks.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt a lot of new skills as well as developing on existing skills. The main development is that I have always been confident in situations where I need more voice heard and this has been enhanced in a work place environments to the point where becoming vocal in meetings feels natural.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme is good however there have been some teething problems which we have provided feedback for so that future groups can have the best possible course. The people on the course are friendly and Balfour Beatty have good support and training systems in place when the university can sometimes not provide.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme from Balfour Beatty standpoint is well organised and we have in house sessions to support the programme. However, the university has used some trial and error methodology when structuring the course which has created issues. The feedback sessions do get listened to and resolved but I think there could be more advanced notice on things.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Plenty of support is given by Balfour Beatty. The company is resource rich and everyone is more than happy to help and offer shadowing etc. The variety of skills on offer can make getting through university modules more manageable as you can delve into different niches to help with studies.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university delivers weekly lectures on day release and we occasionally go into campus. There is plenty of resource most of the time and the lecturers have been good for the most part. However, I do feel that if we are doing a module then the library should have resource for it.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think there are aspects to it that does help with regards to clauses of a contract etc. However, I personally feel that most my learning is done on the job and therefore I see it in reverse that my job role actually supports my learning through the training advisor.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, we have plenty of networking events in the business. On our project alone we have weekly football trianing or gym sessions, meals or drinks out, hikes and even a strava group. That is just to name a few, we then have commercial days to mix in with other projects commercial team.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Balfour Beatty have set an excellent example to the apprentice before and after me, including myself. There is plenty of support around you and the opportunities are there to be taken. Balfour Beatty also have their own emerging talent sector which brings apprentices from different job roles together to complete team building tasks.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • Just be yourself. I have felt it to be a very inclusive workplace that is adjusting to the ever changing world. With mental health first aiders on all projects, any worries can be discussed with the nominated people who are trained to help you out. So basically, it is ok to feel nervous, but once you are in you will realise you weren't the only one.
