My current role I learn each process that is required to make any of the parts for the interiors of the car, which means I spend significant periods of hands on time learning as much as I can about these processes from the workers who do it day in day out. I also spend 2 days a week at college where studying furniture making where i study the fundamentals of wood such as the movement, types of boards and veneering .
During this time I have learnt many new skills from every area such as learning how to sand things to take a finish the best way possible, learning how to select the right timber and veneer for my intended applications, learning how to use basic furniture making tools and marking equipment.
I very much enjoy my current programme as each area I am trained on allows me to understand and gain a greater appreciation for the entire process it takes to build a car and further helps me with each new station along the way. I also enjoy learning the transferable skills from my college course as they become very useful inside and outside of work.
I found the start of the programme was ended up being very disorganized and messy with most of this being due to a shift in the structure of how the apprenticeship is run with the introduction to a brand new foundation course everyone participates in alongside their actual relevant course.
There is a lot of support from from our employer with our head of apprentice person who organizes our courses and placements, our area managers who oversee us in our home department and our coordinator within our home department who organizes our placements around our department and also other departments.
I think I receive the necessary amount of support from my training provider to help me through out the day when I am really struggling. I have also found that I am pushed to think for myself before looking for this support which i find also teaches me more than asking for help and makes me more independant.
I have found there are many transferable skills that I use at work from my training providers such as learning how to pick the right material for its purpose and based off of how prone it is to moving. Additionally learning how to work with and handle veneer to create acceptable work.
There are plenty of extra-curricular activities for example there are monthly socials where all apprentices and interns are invited on evenings out where everyone can get to know each other and chill out, Opportunities to pair with schools in the Green Goblin race where we help a school to design and build their own go kart to race.
Yes
I would recommend Rolls-Royce as they offer extremely good quality apprenticeships with second to none hands on experience in the fields of choice working on live projects or builds. There are many daily opportunities to network and meet new people who can play vital roles in helping build an almost limitless career.
When applying to Rolls-Royce I would highly recommend doing your research of the brand, the available products, how far around the world it reaches and some of the processes to ensure it is a good fit for you. I would also recommend to include any necessary skills or experience no matter how small or useless they may seem and to find ways to make them fit into Rolls and how they can benefit us.
