Assistant Quantity Surveyor - assisting the Senior QS's and Commercial Manager on the project in costing the project. Working directly with sub-contractors every day to reach a best price for their package, sending them relevant and up to date information about the project so that everything is captured within the price. Writing scope of works, assessing drawings, attending sub-contractor meetings. Helping to manage the overall cost management of our retrospective buildings on the project.
Learnt lots of new skills from time management, cost control, risk allowance/allocation, dispute resolution, health and safety and more. Helped develop existing skills such as leading others, team working, organising events and meetings etc.
In hindsight, I have loved my time on the programme. It has given me such a big opportunity to push myself and achieve my goals within an industry that I love. I have made fond friends who I will stay in contact with for life and who help to push me to be better
Sometimes it has been well structured and organised and you know exactly what you are doing and who you can go to if you're struggling but with other topics I have found them to be disorganised and with no real structure. It depends on the subject.
I am lucky to have such a supportive team around me who want to see me excel and push me to be and do better.
I am grateful for our WBL Coach (Richard Clegg) who has supported us so much throughout the years on the programme. He always checks in on us and wants to know how we are really do and what he can do to help.
I learn skills on the programme that I can put into place in my normal day to day; putting skills that you learn into physical practice makes all the difference and ensures that you retain that information as opposed to loosing it once you have learnt it.
There are lots of opportunities for this. I am a member of the D&I KIN network and often organise events for my office to take part in such as a Christmas Quiz and pancake day feasts.

Kier pride itself on being diverse and inclusive and caring about the progression of it's members. Since being in Kier Construction I have really felt this and can confirm that it is true. If this is consistent throughout all other sectors and offices at Kier then I think Kier is a great place to work for those who are willing to learn and grow and achieve their goals.
Have a good work ethic and be passionate about your role and you will go far; this goes above having the knowledge. Knowledge can always be taught
