  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role includes generating tasks from requirements for a system and then designing, writing, testing and deploying these programs. In addition to this I will need to develop documentation to support this process and assist with further testing of the whole product. Finally there is an element of teamwork as we develop code in a group.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my skills with programming as previously I was only experienced in two programming languages and now have developed knowledge in a third while also improving upon the existing two. Further more i have developed soft skills such as teamwork and responsibility. Finally, I have had to develop professional communication skills as this is my first full time job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my programme a lot because I get the opportunity to learn from a variety of placements in the programme but also have my say in what I need to do. Furthermore, the work I am involved in is exciting and the team are very welcoming and kind people making office life enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme itself with work is well structured as there are a number of elements to it designed to support us through our programme, however the provider feels less structured as feedback from previous cohorts appears to have been ignored and they feel unprepared to be delivering a degree level apprenticeship as apposed to their normal post-graduate level studies.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive a good amount of support from a variety of sources within our organisation. Our teams are briefed on the time we need to spend completing work for our provider and as such are accommodating to this. In addition we can go to a variety of figures that understand the apprenticeship for support.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive a lot of support from our skills development coach through regular one to one meetings; In addition we can have contact with them over emails. Some lecturers are more accommodating than others in that they provide optional sessions designed to assist students that are struggling. Apart from this there is a lack of support from higher figures such as SAS lead and course lead.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that this varies wildly, some modules are very well chosen to represent what we will need for the workplace, however, others seem to have no relevance at all. For example, I am a part of a Digital and Technology solutions scheme and we had to do a half-day unit on business finance.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have a variety of social events monthly that are hosted by apprentices, in addition to this there are several "stretch assignments" that can act as extra curriculars dependant on the assignment. Additionally there are regular professional networking events that we can attend with both our placements, and the wider business.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • While BAE do have an issue with communication skills I believe there is a lot of room at BAE to improve upon oneself, not only professionally, but also as a person. Furthermore, there is a progression scheme and I find it a nice place to work with minimal issues that limit my development.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Do your research into what is going on in BAE as this will inform you of what placements may be on offer and if you find a placement you enjoy this will increase your development, and limit the chances of you burning out. Furthermore, this demonstrates that you care about the company and makes you more attractive as a prospective employee.
