As an audit trainee, we are involved in auditing jobs. We work in teams and have support to learn on where we need it. BDO has an inclusive culture which is more relaxed than the big 4. The managers and seniors are there to help trainees grow and are happy to help answer questions and explain sections. Work is flexible with some days at the office, some at home and some at client site. BDO promotes a good work-life balance.
As an accounting graduate, I have been able to put my theoretical knowledge to practise and learn what it means in a practical sense. Many graduates did not study accounting and have the necessary support to enable them to do the work expected and complete jobs to the required standard. There is opportunity to learn everyday and grow at your own pace.
BDO encourages growth and learning. There are socials which promote networking, sports teams and many other extra curricular groups to join which make this programme stand out from other firms. BDO has a place for everyone of all backgrounds and I enjoy meeting people from around the world and learning something new everyday.
The programme is structured well with teams who provide specific support just for trainees and those studying towards their professional qualifications. There is support from peers all the way to partners and may opportunities to give feedback on the programme. The programme is structured to maximise your study-work balance with study leave provided well in advance.
BDO promotes a supportive community. There are multiple levels of support provided for all employees, and particularly trainees. We have buddies who are a year or two above us, mentors who are qualified, and teams of support for all aspects of the job (people, digital, social etc) to help us excel in our roles.
Training providers are in contact with the company directly. When there are issues, the company representative will contact the training provider and get the issue resolved from their side. This allows trainees to focus on their studies and work without having the added stress of having to communicate with training providers.
With an accounting degree, it helps drastically as I understand most of the work given to me without an explanation required from my senior or manager. It is easier to do the work when you understand the background of the work, however there is support from managers if it is required by trainees.
There are lots of areas you can get involved in at work. There are usually monthly socials with take place (e.g. Bounce, Sixes Cricket etc). There are sporting teams like netball or football to join. We have lots of networking events, in person and online, to check in with colleagues, meet new people and discuss opportunities

BDO is a good place to work, with a friendly culture and focus on teaching and quality. It has many perks and being a medium firm, it has the capacity for big clients and small clients so their is a wide range of exposure for trainees to get involved in.
Be yourself in your interview! The firm can see your achievements on your CV, they want to see if you are a good fit into the firm and the culture. Being yourself is the best way for them to make a decision, as they want driven people who are ready to learn and immerse themselves in the programme.
