  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am assigned different sections from financial statements and I must test the balances to see whether the amounts stated are correct. I check the amounts by conversing with the client, who will then have to provide evidence of the amounts. This can be done by providing an invoice, employment contract or any other evidence.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many IT skills during my short time working, for example I am much more efficient using Excel in comparison to when I first started. I am also much more knowledgeable in audit, as I better understand the processes and the reasoning behind the testing performed. I have also had to work in a team with senior members giving me more confidence in these types of situations.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I have really enjoyed what I have learnt so far, as I had almost no knowledge of audit before. This learning experience has helped me as I enjoy to learn about new things. I believe that as I progress I will be able to learn even more about audit and the procedures behind it.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Overall my programme has been very well organised as we have had plenty of time for training, we have been told what will happen, and when, since our first days. For our exams we are given plenty of time before starting and are provided with sufficient support from the training provider

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We are given lots of support and are helped in terms of planning our exams and making sure we have enough time between them. Also for things not related to exams we are supported, if there are any other issues we have. We are assigned people managers and have frequent meetings to discuss how we are getting on.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Our training provider has a website with many resources to use, we can practise all sorts of questions in a format which is similar to the exam. This helps to prepare properly for the exam and give us the best opportunity of succeeding in the exams. We have emails that we can contact for additional support.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think the qualification gives a lot of reasoning and an explanation behind why we do what we do. It ties into what I see in the office, helping me have a better understanding of the work I perform, but also helping with my studies as I can use my knowledge gained to my advantage.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are many extra-curricular activities such as football and netball teams that play. The office has an evening for drinks once a month, which helps to unwind and meet other people within the office. There are also other events throughout the year such as the Christmas Party or Summer Barbeque.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BDO to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • You will receive a great qualification, working at a huge company that is known world wide. This will help with whatever you want to do in the future as the experience gained working at BDO will show that you are a capable individual, and will have worked for and with some of the biggest companies in the country,

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BDO?
  • I would advise those applying to try and find out more about what you actually applying for, if there are people you know who work in the same sector, ask them what they think and consider whether you will enjoy it. I would also recommend to properly prepare for exams as you do not want to get caught out by them
