I'm a first year apprentice, started around 8 months ago. I rotate only within consulting (Forensics (financial crime/fraud), banking risk, banking regulation, operational transformation (supply chain/ procurement), Financial Transformation).t. My role on a day-to-day basis depends on the project i'm working on. General tasks include formatting powerpoints, attending client meetings, support in creating materials for the client.
I feel like I've developed lots of soft skills: networking, communication learning about the general business world. However, I feel like I could be pushed further, learning is quite slow and sometimes you are often on "the bench" where your not on a project or doing PMO (Project Management adminy roles) which are not the best for learning. Then again, I feel like you have to do those roles everyone starts somewhere!
I feel like I could be learning more somewhere else if I'm honest, but overall enjoy my programme. There doesn't feel like there's a rigid hierarchy, you can talk to partners and directors and their really lovely. I've made some great apprentice friends and enjoy going into the office in Canary Wharf.
Fairly well organised, you have college every couple of months and the exams are booked for me. What I concerned about is whether ill be able to get into the department I want to specialise in, its not 100% certain that I will get a place there. Every 9 months I move to a different department.
I would say quite a lot of support. You get a buddy when you first join who shows you the ropes. I'm supported by my department, you have a PM (Performance manager) who tracks your progress and you can talk to if you feel burnt out ect. You get study leave and support from BPP for the exams.
If I'm honest its a lot of self study for me personally they go through the content/dont cover all the content so you have to do it at home in your spare time. Its definitely manageable tho most people pass the exams fine, but you do have to put the work in.
I'm doing the AAT, an accounting qualification but my role is not accounting/audit based. Therefore, no. But the programme is changing for something more relevant called the L4 Management consultant qualification which will be more relevant. However, I don't mind doing the AAT as it means I am exempt from some exams from the CIMA/ACA so I think its a good thing I'm doing it.
Yes, lots. Theres a LGBT society, jewish network and many more. I think theres also a Rugby team. Lots of networking events. Theres the Young MCA which you can get involved in. They do real life events where you can network with other consultants from different firms delloite, EY ect. So yes, lots to get involved in
Yes
I would say overall yes. It places you 3 years ahead of anyone who went to uni and experience is valued so much more. great networking, easy to make friends, good work life balance (when you don't have exams). However there are downfalls sometimes i feel like a PA but you have to start somewhere so overall would recommend.
Be curious- ask lots of questions Network- when you first get into the department intro yourself to people in the team. Make yourself known. In your interview- ask the interviewer questions about their role and industry. Research connected, powered and trusted. How do your values align to KPMG values of togetherness ect
