  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have subcontractor packages that i have to manage and I independently complete payments and liabilities each month. As well as this I have been given tasks throughout the project to complete remeasures of work to enable a forecast remeasure to be completed, going out on site supported these measures.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I had valuable knowledge from my college course due to it covering a large amount of topic within my university course. Being at work has allowed me to develop my theoretical knowledge and put it into practice when completing a variety of different tasks. I have learnt a number of different skills which not only relate to my role, but also civil engineering role as well as i have had the opportunity to conduct several site visits assisting the engineers.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my programme as I am able to work full time and attend university one day a week. This works really well as for my assignment I can use the vast amount of knowledge from on the job learning to contribute which is very beneficial to me as i enjoy being hands on as well as learning.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme is well organised with working Monday to Thursday and attending university on a Friday. This allows me to take into consideration the modules that i am currently learning within the university course and apply this to the work i am carrying out on the project i am working on.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a huge amount of support from my employer, as well as several colleagues i am working on site with. Everyone is always willing to help and support me with tasks i am struggling on and they provide advice and guidance on what i am doing well as well as things i could improve on to make my skills exceed expectations.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • There has been a few occasions where i have struggles with a certain section or tasks on a university module. The university tutors are mostly helpful when coming across challenges and there are a number of tutors who go above and beyond for the students by providing extra resources to assist in the specific area of work.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification helps me perform better in work as I am gaining valuable knowledge on different areas within my job role which helps me to complete daily tasks thoroughly and understand the different language that is used on my project and throughout the construction industry which is important to develop my role and responsibilities.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • On my project there is a running club every Wednesday which a number of workers on site attend. There has been a number of opportunities to meet the wider North West team where we have been able to go to the main office base along with other apprentices and get to know them and the project that they are working on.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Since joining Balfour Beatty i have been consistently supported throughout my practical work as well as my university studies. Everyone has been helpful and friendly which makes going to work better as the team around me are consistently there to support me.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?
  • I would say not to worry about making big choices in your life. Balfour Beatty has helped my confidence grow so much and always remind me that it is okay to make mistakes because the key to knowledge is making mistakes and learning from these to better yourself as a person and in the workplace.
