As an ODP, I work as part of a multidisciplinary team within operating theatres. As a duel-trained practitioner, I split my time 50/50 between helping the anaesthetists and the surgeons.
I have learnt skills that will me progress into a management role within my department.
I enjoy learning new things and discovering new ways to relate to my colleagues. I have also learnt how to be a more patient mentor for any new starters we have join the team.
There has been a lot of confusion regarding assignments and what is expected of us. We often get contradicting information from our lecturers that doesn't correspond with the information on Moodle.
My Clinical Lead has been very supportive however there has been confusion regarding what opportunities this degree with offer once it is completed. There is no guaranteed promotion at the end.
As much as I have requested. MMU are constantly offering support.
There have been elements that I can take back into my clinical role as a band 5 ODP but most of what I'm learning will aid me should I get a band 6 position which is management based.
My team is very friendly and we often organise team building exercises outside of work.
Yes
They provide a distance learning degree in the form of an apprenticeship that allows me to continue my role as an ODP without having to relocate.
It really helps if you have an idea of what role you want after completing this degree. Also, it can be difficult when there are only 3 clinical people in your cohort and the rest are office based.
