  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Delivering projects to improve end-to-end business processes that support business strategy and requirements. Focusing on making end-to-end business processes that are customer-centric, where performance can be maximised and waste minimised. Ensuring that projects have clear prioritisation and are aligned to the business strategy and objectives. Using appropriate methods (E.g. workshop facilitation) to ensure stakeholders are engaged and clear design decisions are attained. Using data-based analysis to ensure business decisions are made based on fact rather than opinion, challenging how the business currently operates. Ensuring design decisions are correct through programme governance and solution meets overall business objectives. Delivering clear tangible benefits against defined targets. Supporting a culture of continuous improvement across the Travis Perkins Group.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout the apprenticeship my leadership skills have improved as I was able to bring senior stakeholders from across the business along the journey with me. I also had to influence other colleagues that were going to be part of my two trials. Bringing everyone together as one team ensured that the project was successful.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I did enjoy the programme as both myself and the business were getting something out of it. Being able to identify the problem using data that was collected using tools that were provided, and the fact that there was a significant improvement at the end meant that it was successful. I build up some new working relationships with colleagues that I wouldn't have had the chance to work with otherwise.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There was a change in the learning platform halfway through my programme which made this a lot easier to track my progress- as I worked through the modules. I had fortnightly meetings with my coach to ensure that I was able to check-in with any questions that I had. I always felt that I had the support from those who could help me if needed.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer was fantastic. They knew how important this was to me personally and that I was delivering an improvement project that would help the business. My line manager and my sponsor were able to break down barriers if it was something that I needed help with. It was never questioned that I had to prioritise other work above this which made me feel comfortable.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My coach was very supportive and we had a great working relationship. He was very knowledgeable and was able to help me when I had a problem. He was able to understand my project even though he didn't know my business which made it easy to progress through the different modules. I always got a quick reply back when sending emails.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • This qualification is exactly suited to my current role. Not only having some new skills to carry it out better but I had to mentor some other colleagues who were doing a Level 4 within my business ensuring that I had to know what I was talking about. It's made me more confident carrying out my day to day activities.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There were a couple of behavior modules where I had to discuss such things as behavior working safely and professionalism. I used my role as a mental health first aider and proved where I have approached a colleague or they have approached me and I’ve had to act Professionally showing care and empathy. I was able to also show instances where I had set up such things as "Netwalking" to bring colleagues within the business closer together.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Travis Perkins Plc to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Travis Perkins PLC is a fantastic place to work. Everyone looks out for each other and the company has three values that everything is pinned to; We Care, We're Better Together and We Give Our Best To Be The Best. It's also one of the country's top 100 companies to work for and has been for a number of years. I've been here for 10 years now within 6 different roles, there is always a chance to progress and further your carrier. I always recommend TP as a great place to work.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Travis Perkins Plc?
  • As mentioned above, this is a win-win for both the colleague taking an apprenticeship getting a qualification and the business as the project that is being delivered is going to improve the way we work. It improves your profile within the business as you get to work with other colleagues that you possibly wouldn't have the chance to within your current role.
