My placement is currently in corporate responsibility/ educational outreach. This means my day to day role includes planning and delivering STEM activities at local schools and libraries to increase young people's interest in STEM and engineering. I work with a lot of BAE's stakeholders and plan lots of events.
I have began to develop my stakeholder management skills due to working with so many different people from both within the business and external businesses on a daily basis. I have developed my leadership skills by running various projects and also my teamwork skills by working with lots of different teams at different events.
I enjoy working with lots of people so getting out of the business and engaging with members of the public is good, however I would like to have more of an involvement within BAE. I feel very isolated to the rest of the business as my job is not boat related at all.
I think that the programme is well organised and structured. I always know what I need to be doing and when I need to be doing it. Projects and daily tasks are organised too and I am always and consistently clearly informed of things that I need to know about.
I receive a lot of support from my employer. Someone is always available to ask for help or advice if it is needed, and there is always someone willing to provide assistance with jobs you can't do alone. The office is a kind and supportive environment to be in.
I receive a good amount of support from my training provider/ university of cumbria. They teach us one day a week but are always available to message and ask for help regarding assignments on other days of the week as well. They help as much as they can with assignments.
I think my qualification helps me work better in my role as it provides me with knowledge of things I wouldn't have already known. For example, I learnt how to use Microsoft Project at university and now use it every time I need to plan and deliver a project in my placement.
There are lots of opportunities to get involved with things outside of work. These include things like social events and meals out with people from the office and sports events like the Local Higher Apprentice Council's upcoming rounders match. These activities help make you feel more involved with your team at work.
Yes
I like working for BAE Systems as I like having the work life balance that flexible working hours provides. I like being able to start early and finish early in the day so I can have time after work to do my own things. I also like the SASK building.
Be prepared to work hard and put 110% in everything that you do. Embrace the opportunities that are there for you even if they might be a bit out of your comfort zone. Work hard to achieve all of your competencies that are needed to pass your apprenticeship (if applicable).
