  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have been shadowing members of site to get an idea what their jobs are, and how it links into the station. This includes working in the stores receipting and putting away deliveries. Making up PR's and PO's to buy items/material. Also a bit of invoice queries.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I've learned a few new skills. Mostly what I said prior, stock checking working with Maximo, an accounting system, doing PR's and PO's on Maximo. I have had a bit of time working with excel spreadsheets relating to budgets. Haven't learned to much of that yet but should soon.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Not as much as I would have thought. I'm doing an accounting course, at a power station so I don't feel as though I'm getting as much experience and value as if I was at an accounting firm. I was left to myself for months to start with, which wasn't enjoyable as I wasn't getting any work to do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Not at all. I am the first person to do this apprenticeship at this site. However my journey so far has not been structed well at all. I was sitting on my own for the first couple of months with very little work to do. I was asked what college course I want to go onto next in about August/September for going onto my second year. I thought all of my college course's should have been planned and laid out before I was hired.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • It's getting better. When I first started it was it was pour the amount of support I was getting. Then once my old boss got promoted and I got a new boss in he has tried to be a lot more supportive which has been a good help.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • With Babbington I did receive a good bit of support. It was hard for me as I was doing remote learning and didn't have a teacher to always help. My contact from Babington was quite good at getting in touch but near the end it wasn't great. It was better then my second year training provider

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It definitely gives me the back ground to excel more in my role. I wouldn't say it's been directly helpful as such. Just because I haven't really got to the work I am going to be doing yet. It has more been shadowing other members to get an idea of how the station runs.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are occasional events hosted outside of work. This is normally a member of staff who organises this though instead of coming directly from SSE. Most members on site go for a christmas meal/ night out, which a part of gets paid for everyone. Which is a nice touch

  • 9a. Would you recommend SSE to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Maybe for a different role then mine I would recommended a friend. Such as the ones in the workshop. As they get a lot of really good experience working on site. However for my role it has not been organised well at all. Really messy/not knowing what I'm meant to be doing. I feel like there would be a better place to go to learn to be an accountant. If that's what you're looking for.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SSE?
  • SSE focuses on saftey. So if you can make sure to touch on that either in your cv or through one of the interview stages. Speak about conducting risk assessments. SSE's logo is, if it's not safe we don't do it. Also just try and show how committed you are to learning and improving.
