  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a transport planner I help contribute towards various transport projects, whether it is small scale schemes such as walking and cycling routes, or wider network plans or developments. I have gotten involved in a wide range of skills and projects, including doing report writing, auditing of routes and doing travel surveys

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed lots of different skills, most notably improving my presentation skills which were previously fairly poor and I was less confident. I have also gained more knowledge in how to use Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel well and to a good standard, and I can use GIS programmes like ArcGIS Pro to a decent standard.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I would say to a large extent i have enjoyed my programme. It is very good at giving me a wide range of skills and pieces of work to do. I have been fortunate to speak to and meet a lot of different people across the business in the UK and around the world.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Pretty well I would say. There is a very large and wide structure. It is quite a complex system but you do get more used to it as you go. It began very hard to understand but it is much better now. The relationship with my training provider and the company is good.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have access to a range of support. I was first introduced to a buddy when I started, who showed me around a lot of the office. I have a supportive line manager who has guided me all the way, and the team I work with is very good and fun to be around.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My college was very good at supporting me, offering good teaching, fun and engaging lessons most of the time, and other colleagues who were able to help with pastoral support and admin. And the people on the course with me were great and overall it was an enjoyable experience to say the least.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I have found all of the training that I do to be quite useful. Perhaps not for daily tasks but for a lot of my project work and responsibilities, I feel like it has given me a much better understanding of the environment that I work in and a lot of the skills I have to apply.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes my work has quite an active social front, and within my office there is the sports and social club where there are regular opportunities to do things like football on Monday nights, and we have a very sociable office overall. There is also bigger UK-wide events like Sports Day.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Mott MacDonald to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Motts is a good company. They value their staff and provide lots of support and benefits. I enjoy a lot of the work I do. The people are good and there is always somebody in the office to talk to. They deal with work/life and hybrid working very well.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mott MacDonald?
  • Ensure that you have an interest in the sector going forward as things are definitely changing quite fact. Be prepared to be engaged in sustainability and a changing environment. Don't stress about how it will go as my interviewers were very nice, and make sure that you are open to lots of different work!
