  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a shift manager. My role within the store is to lead the restaurant, focusing on sales, speed of service, customer satisfaction, ensuring I am meeting the customers expectations with our gold standard food. I look after the shift, ensuring we are delivering great service to our customers, focusing on Labour, Drive Thru times, Delivery times, Production speed etc.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • During my apprenticeship I have learnt lots of new skills within the store, such as inventory, ordering, delivery procedures, production focus and more. I have developed myself into a much better manager and feel that my shifts run better because of this. Having the apprenticeship definitely makes a difference especially in terms of my knowledge that I gain both when doing components or off-the-job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme, as it is helpful and enjoyable. My coach is a lovely support and I am eager to get some qualifications. However, sometimes doing apprenticeships with McDonalds can be hard as you cannot always find the time to get these things done. Not being given the time within working hours will lead to being behind, which makes me a bit stressed.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • In terms of Lifetime training, it has been really easily organised and structured on a monthly basis, however my store is finding it hard to find the time, which means I don’t have a schedule of sorts, I just try to fit in the apprenticeship days where I can.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employee is very supportive but due to the lack of managers, sometimes it can be tough to give me office time when I am needed on the shop floor. It can be quite frustrating but I know that my BM does her best to find the time and help me catch up.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider has been amazing, so supportive and understanding and I am so grateful. My lifetime training coach is great, and she helps me whenever I need and spends time to help me catch up as she knows I get stressed.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe they are very well connected and it really truly helps with my shift running abilities to complete the apprenticeship as there is a lot of good knowledge regarding leadership and getting the most out of your people which I am using regularly on the shop floor.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We do not really have any extra curricular activities, although maybe that would be fun. With this kind of role, you work 5 days a week, sometimes 6, longer hours; there is no time for sports and games. However, McDonalds did create a football tournament which any stores could join, but the guys from my store would rather play alone as a group.

  • 9a. Would you recommend McDonald's to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have been working in McDonalds for almost 6 years and I do not regret a thing. It has been a great job that has improved my confidence massively and taught me so much about myself, about working and about others. It’s just been such a learning experience and I really do have a passion for it.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to McDonald's?
  • McDonalds isn’t for everyone, but if you come to work with a can do attitude and try your best, you’ll find that you do care and that it’ll go really well. McDonalds has been more than just a job for me, it’s been a place to make friends, meet my partner, and grow.
