I manage a programme that provides energy efficiency solutions to those that are in financial hardship and live in energy inefficient homes. I lead a team of about 30 individuals that includes project managers and administrators who work with our contractor base to ensure that these solutions are delivered according to cost, time and quality parameters.
I am currently undertaking a senior leadership apprenticeship that covers a broad range of topics. The course is improving current skills that i have whilst also teaching me new ones such as finance and innovation. I am straying to apply these skills to my day to day role as a senior leader.
I really enjoy the classroom training where I learn alongside a great and supportive cohort. The other apprentices on my course cover a broad range of backgrounds and job families and therefore provide really interesting and varied viewpoints. Balancing the requirements of the course with a busy full time job and home life is an ongoing challenge.
The structure of the programme is absolutely brilliant. We were made aware of all of the subjects, timings and locations of the programme at the outset allowing me to plan well in advance. Frequent reminders are sent to ensure we are familiar with upcoming arrangements and these also cover any pre work that is required.
I couldn't ask for any more support from my employer. I have a supportive workplace mentor who always makes himself available for advise and guidance. I have always been allowed the flexibility to attend classroom training and am also given the time to study and complete assessments where required.
As much support as I require really. University tutors make themselves available to answer questions plus I have an academic mentor for support. In addition I have made us of the university library resources and had 121 time with an expert on academic english. There is also plenty of online support material available.
I feel like I am starting to apply the learnings through the qualification to my day job. I am hopeful that I will become a better leader upon completion of the course and should stand me in good stead for any future career development. I am also role modelling how important personal development is.
There are certainly opportunities to network and I have attended a number of conferences where I have been able to do so, both leadership focussed ones and team get togethers. Social activities have included trips to Alton Towers and the odd escape room which have covered social elements but also a focus on better team working,
Yes
They are an extremely supportive employer and the pay and benefits package is more than competitive. The opportunity to work in a hybrid way also enables a great work life balance where I can interact with my team face to face but also benefit from the extra time that working from home provides. The fact that E.ON are supporting and funding my apprenticeship is an added bonus.
Do your research on the company as it is an extremely large and varied organisation. When applying i would ensure that you focus on the customer but also reference the climate crisis and wanting to be part of the solution. Ensure that you bring your authentic self to the selection process with energy, enthusiasm and passion.
