  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Get to rotate through different teams within the research department, meaning I get to experience a variety of different roles throughout the four years. Complete technical work and research into exciting new technologies, with a mix of practical hands on work and software development.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt many new skills, there is a massive opportunity to develop any skills you wish, getting help from experts in the areas. You also get a chance to develop your soft, interpersonal skills as well as the technical skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I think overall the programme is enjoyable. The mix of University work, Rotation ('Normal') work and volunteering work makes it very challenging and relies on good time management skills, which can sometimes be overwhelming. However, the work is varied and enjoyable.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme does have a good structure, being at University once per week online and then attending Exeter in person for a week every term. Besides this, you are expected to be in the office completing normal work. Sometimes the programme can be unstructured with additional work and challenges.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There is a wide range of support available including line manager, rotation manager, team members and fellow apprentices. Overall, I have found that everyone is willing to help with any questions or queries you have, and will provide as much detail as required.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Exeter provides you with a mentor alongside your normal lecturers, these are there to support you with any questions you have throughout the course. However, the nature of only having one online lecture per week can make it challenging when studying and learning content.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Some of the modules I study at University do correlate to the work that I do and therefore benefit me, however this completely depends on what rotation you are in and when. Some content is completely unrelated and doesn't benefit me at all.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There is a whole variety of things to get involved with at Adastral Park including, sports clubs, volunteering opportunities and some professional networking events. I did have some induction networking events at the start of my apprenticeship, but haven't had many more since.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Overall, the work environment is really good, being fairly relaxed but providing you with a good mix of challenges and support. The University course is good, and Exeter is a good University to attend. The best thing is the opportunity to learn and earn at the same time.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT Group?
  • Have a solid CV in the initial application. Keep calm on the video interview (everyone gets nervous), this is a weird experience as you're essentially talking to yourself, but try to act natural. Make sure to get involved with all tasks in the Assessment Centre.
