  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I audit government and public sector accounts, reviewing their financial statements and comparing to evidence provided by the client. I liaise with clients on a regular basis. As an assistant senior, I coach more junior members of the team in my areas of expertise, and help to complete their work.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed my people skills, as I was initially very introverted, and I now am able to speak to clients confidently. I have gained a lot of industry specific skills, such as knowledge in auditing NHS and local government accounts. I also continually develop my knowledge day to day.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme as it allows me to develop my skills in accounting, whilst working towards a globally recognised qualification. The people I work with are very supportive, and tutors with the tuition provider are a great help with the exams. I can take the skills learnt into my future.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is quite well structured as there is a clear exams pathway, which can be modified based on exam results and personal needs. There can be a lot of admin that is not factored into our work day, though, which can become tedious. But overall I think it is well structured.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support from my managers and peers, which is really helpful in working towards the qualification. EY also provides various resources, such as apprenticeship coaches, for if we feel we need extra support with the programme. There is a good level of support throughout the company.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider, Kaplan, provides a lot of support, such resources on the learning portal to allow us to email or arrange a call with a tutor. This can make a huge difference when we do not understand a topic we are studying. During class time, the tutors are also very supportive.

    9/10

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification is directly related to the accounting role, however it is very corporate based. As a government and public sector auditor, this can mean that I am learning things that are not used in my role. However, as this is a globally recognised qualification, I would not expect it to cater specifically to my industry.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I get involved in recruitment activities, letting students know about the apprentice programmes available at EY. I also lead peer group discussions and take our feedback up to management. I get involved in mental health initiatives, as it is something I am very passionate about, and I provide support to my colleagues.

    9/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There are some great programmes available at EY, and the team is very supportive. The qualification offered is globally recognised, so there is a lot of room for career growth. I think that doing an apprenticeship is a superior alternative to university in the accounting field, as you are gaining knowledge from the age of 18, and earning while you learn.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • I would advise people to consider what sector that they would like to specialise in, and look for opportunities within EY in that sector. I would also advise people get involved in extra-curriculars in school, as these show passion and commitment, which often times is preferred over just having good grades.
