My role involves many different tasks and can vary from day to day it can consist of filling in spreadsheets for data management and requests to creation of drawings and models for projects and to show clients, I've also assisted in creating material for client meetings that help forward projects.
Yes I've learnt new skills within IT such as using CAD software which allows me to create models and drawings, I've also developed IT skills within excel as I use it for some maths and data storing, And of course general math skills for finding different types of specifications such as load
I enjoy the work side however the education side is a struggle and finding a good balance between work college and having a life is sometimes difficult especially when we are assigned a lot of assignments at once which happens at least once a term, the college facilities are also atrocious
It is well organised in the sense that it is consistent and you can always predict what you will receive and when, however sometimes it seems unorganised especially when I first joined as I didn't have a lot of work and the college and company don't seem to interact
I receive enough support to get by however due to requiring specific types of evidence for my NVQ it can be difficult to get due to it being confidential.
Some of the tutors are extremely helpful when it comes to assisting however a couple seem to just leave us to figure out what we're doing on our own which causes unnecessary stress as we're unable to complete assignments as we don't have the necessary information to continue
Certain aspects of my course has transferred well such as the drainage and superstructure segments however my role is not based around residential design which is what a large amount of my college work seems to follow, parts of it could transfer in the event I work on structures however I currently do not
Yes the company runs a apprenticeship scheme which allows apprentices that join in a year to interact with each other and network with each other, the company also has a sports and social team in each office that organises events that allows people who may not work with each other interact.
Yes
The company over all is a great place to work as it offers a nice and friendly work environment as well as a welcoming one for new starters and apprentices and grads who may not have any engineering experience, it is also a social space allowing for everyone to interact.
Just be yourself and honest, this ensures that you aren't given tasks outside of your abilities without the knowledge being given to you, and allows you to gain the most from the opportunities you are given.
