Day to day role varies depending on what project I am working on. Can involve using Computer Aided Design software to create engineering drawings conveying information for different stages of a projects design. Investigating design standards and ensuring design complies with the relevant standards is also an important aspect of the job.
I have learnt a variety of new skills while at work including but not limited to how to use different design software, communication skills, time management skills and other social skills. I have learnt how to find information and apply knowledge in design and what is required in a project.
I enjoy the programme. I have met lots of new people and enjoy coming into the office to work in a collaborative environment. I also enjoy being at university and developing my knowledge and applying this knowledge in my work.
The programme seems well organised and structured. I have been introduced to several contacts both at work and university to who I can direct my questions depending on the topic. The university course is also well structured as it has set milestones and encourages us to use our work experience in portfolio assignments.
So far my employer has been very supportive when it comes to both work and university. For example for university exams I am able to take study days to focus on studying and revising for the exams which can make the lead up to an exam much less stressful as I have more time.
When working towards the degree the training providers have made it very clear who I can speak to and where I can raise any issues. There are also progress meetings that are held so the university and my employer can discuss my progress. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a response from university contacts
I think the qualification does help me build on my knowledge which I can then use in my project work. I do sometimes think that the qualification module content is slightly dated and we are learning how to use methods that we wouldn't necessarily use now as there is more advanced technology available.
There are lots of extra curricular activities and social events to get involved in which are usually subsidised by the company. I have been to several and have been able to meet new people and network with colleagues. I think there should be more events for apprentices to meet and network as well though.
Yes
Mott MacDonald is good company and it is clear it puts its employees first and that they are respected by the senior leadership and are supported in their development. There is a friendly culture in the offices and people are approachable and can always help if you have any issues.
My advice to others applying for Mott MacDonald would be to understand the company values and what they mean to the company and its employees. Be open to learn and always ask questions to show that you want to develop. Show that you are independent and like to solve problems but that you are also not afraid to ask for help.
