Engineering Risk Manager Review

Ensuring our engineering assets and physical products are safe, legal and reliable. This involves various hazard studies and risk assessments, taking into account health, safety, environmental impacts, operational technology cyber security, physical security and financial, commercial and reputational impacts. I travel to various UK sites, typically once or twice per week.

During my apprenticeship the knowledge and skills I have learned or developed as part of the risk and safety management MSc have been used to improve my own capabilities with respect to process safety, but also my capacity to understand gaps in my capabilities and therefore ensure I engage the necessary expertise

I enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately the impact of COVID meant our face to face sessions did not happen (other than at the very beginning of the course). This certainly reduced opportunities to make new contacts or sharing learning experiences (i.e. by meeting and getting to know the other students).

It was very well organised. The course materials were of a good quality. The risktec portal worked very well. I like the student forum section where we could ask questions of tutors and they could provide answers for the benefit of everyone on the course. The assignments were marked on time.

My employer is very supportive and has allowed me the time I need to complete the learning, tasks and assignments. They have also been supportive in the material I intend to submit as part of the end point assessment which will be based on projects I have become involved in as a result of the apprenticeship.

Risktec were excellent as a training provider. The course notes were well written and the modules were presented by very knowledgeable people with lots of relevant real world experience. The tutors were also always happy to provide additional support or answer questions outside of the formal class sessions that we had.

The qualification is perfectly suited to my role. I have had prior exposure to a lot of the content, but the MSc allowed me to learn the topics properly, from first princpals. For example, I had encountered some elements of physical effects modelling, but only ever in isolation and without fully understanding the broader context or being familiar with some of the key standards which are used within the industry.

E.ON has a very active social activity hub which is accessible via the internal portal. I haven't accessed any but only because I am already active in clubs in my home town. There are various professional networking events including a specific community / event programme for engineers and technicians.

E.ON are very supportive with respect to training and development. There is a dedicated learning portal which provides access to a wide range of training courses and activities. This includes technical and non-technical subjects. E.ON are particularly supportive of the apprenticeship scheme and this is actively promoted via the technical networks.

If applying to EON it is important to understand the current and future market EON operates in. Decarbonisation and a reduction in energy costs are critical drivers which impact the engineering capabilities required. To be successful at EON, it helps if you are passionate about these objectives and this is evident from your behaviours.
