  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis, my job involves greeting customers and talking to them about our products and services we offer. I also keep up the maintenance of the showroom making sure it is presentable for when customers arrive. I assist with customer orders and am able to create a few small designs for them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy this programme because it is going to allow my career to open up to a range of different possibilities. I will be qualified in the Design industry meaning that I can branch out and try different types of design careers. I enjoy the people who are on the course with me as they are a great support network.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I would say the programme could be organised a little better. It's a lot of, here's the brief now do the work. Where as this can be a little tricky if you have no idea what the brief is about if you have never heard of that subject before.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very supportive with this apprenticeship. They allow me to have my allocated time to complete my course work and are happy to help where they can if there is something I need help with. I am able to attend visits and appointments with the Designers to help gain experience on this side of things.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training providers have all been very supportive if you need them. They are fairly easy to email or message if you are struggling with something in particular. If you need a quick catch up about something, they are more than happy to set up a meeting to go through the current module with you.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I think this has helped me a lot. I have learnt a lot of new skills and tricks when using the CAD system. I am able to understand more clearly about what needs to go into a plan/design and the regulations that must be followed. It's very easy to see how something small can cause a large problem when designing, so it's important to always check your work and to ask for help if needed.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At the moment there isn't, a few of the staff get together once a year and complete a mud run and some other colleagues play football with each other once a week. It would be nice if we did more as there are so many staff members in the store that we rarely speak to.

  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Since working at Wickes, it's one of the best companies I have worked for. They are always treating the staff with respect and are very hot on making sure colleagues are OK and checking on their well being. Wickes is a fun and friendly atmosphere to work in and I would highly recommend.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wickes?
  • Just be yourself. Wickes is big on inclusion and diversity and celebrated every individual. They have a fun working atmosphere and have plenty of opportunities to progress your career further. Whether it's working on the shop floor or in the showroom, there is always a place for someone to show their true potential.
