My job involves many aspects of the construction industry. As a building surveyor this can be both professional and project work. This comprises of surveys including; measured surveys, condition surveys, defect surveys and general building surveys. Also, there is a variety of office work including preparing contracts, payment certificate, report writing and the use of CAD.
The main skill that I have learnt is building confidence to try new things with minimal help. This encourages independent learning, however, help is always available when required. Another key skill is communication skills; whether this be between colleagues, directors, contractors, clients, university staff, tutors, university friends and any other person met on the job.
As most people do with apprentices, the main attraction is being payed whilst learning on the job. This is also one of my favorite aspects of the workplace, however being payed for a job that you enjoy is the most important thing. This is due to the great range of people that I am fortunate to work with.
My program is well organized in the company and in the university. University appreciates that as apprentices we will have a busier working week than most others. Therefore they may push deadlines back in our favour. The company also provides regular training and allocates study time when required ahead of exams.
My employer offers a great range of support. The most important being my colleagues. Between them they have a great breadth of knowledge with is imperative for learning on the job but also for studying. They also provide training sessions and CDM to further our career path in the professional industry.
My University training provider offers a great range of support for students and other apprentices on my course. We have a tutor, who is always willing to give advice on how to cope with university. Student support services are also available to anyone at anytime and lecturers are responsive and willing to go the extra mile when asked.
My end goal through education will be to become a RICS Chartered Surveyor. As I am on a direct route to this goal on my pathway, this is crucial to achieve this. The professional skills and knowledge can be directly applied into the industry and the workplace once covered in education. Sometimes I notice links the next day when I've been to university.
Our company offers a variety of out of work activities to get involved with. This includes regular socials. There are also informal events that take place throughout the year thanks to the dedicated staff. The company also puts on professional networking events, welcoming future and existing clients and contractors and staff.
Yes
The company is extremely friendly and welcoming. This was especially important for me as an individual who had never had a job before. The company offers a wide variety of services that everyone is welcome to get involved in if they ask. Finally my colleagues are supportive of my education and appreciate the work I do.
To others applying to our company, I would recommend to be as genuine and true to yourself whether this is in a CV, Personal Statement, Interview or application. The company values the individuals as much as their skillset. Personalities, hobbies and hard work create a great employee and is never underestimated in the company.
