I am a second year apprentice and my day to day role at the moment consists of managing a BIM team for a project. I am responsible for the international coordination for this team and assigning tasks to several technicians. I am also responsible for running meetings and producing deliverables
I have learnt several skills. I am competent in both CAD and BIM software's and aware of methods of good practise. This ranged from AutoCAD to Tekla. I have also learnt about British standard and eurocodes and am able to utilise these in my work. I have improve my communication and people skills by working collaboratively
I do very much enjoy my program. I get challenged at work to improve as an engineer and person and this creates a high level of job satisfaction. I also get to complete the degree I wanted to complete full time and gain lots and lots of work experience in the mean time
My program is fairly well structured. I manage to keep myself busy in my project role however when i am light on work this is quickly filled. I am aware of the incoming work and what i will be working on for months in advance so am able to prepare. The company also gives me time for University day release and study days to prepare for exams
I receive more than enough support from the employer. When I need time to study I am able to take days off. When I have questions at work I am supported and can ask questions without feeling ashamed and everyone is more than happy to help which is really nice
I receive a fair amount of support from my training provider. An adequate amount of resources are provided to supplement my learning however the smaller amount of contact hours as an apprentice makes things harder. This is exacerbated by the long days on campus in which it is difficult to concentrate after a many lectures in a row
My qualifications allow me to understand the principles on which my job role is based on. I get to have an understanding of many aspects of civil engineering which i may not encounter on the day to day, this is very helpful as it gives me insight into my colleagues and their work
There are many extra curricular activities to get involved in work. These include football and netball teams after work which are very popular. There are many professional networking event available to attend such as local ICE events. We also have an extensive ECP network which provides more networking opportunities for those starting their careers
Yes
Mott MacDonald is a fantastic place to work. Every colleague you meet is kind and supportive. The work culture is very positive and thrives on teamwork and innovation. I have been challenged in my work allowing me to gain knowledge and skills and have a high level level of work satisfaction. Management is always available to answer questions and offer advice and make sure you are satisfied while feeling valued
I would say it is important to have a good work ethic while maintaining your unique perspective on things. It is important to think outside the box and to be open to innovation and changes. I think it is also important to bring personality into whichever team you apply to as this only adds to the diversity
