Assistant Engineer Review

Mainly working as a technician and assistant engineer in the Arup Campus office. My daily tasks involve coordinating with engineers, producing CAD outputs (drawings/3D models), carrying out coordination reviews, carrying out design calculations, feasibility studies, BIM work, clash detection, quality checks.

Yes. Arup are great for training. I have learnt many skills on my apprenticeship. From coordinating with multiple disciples to learning new software's. I have worked on projects from all around the world. My responsibility has made an impact from day 1.

The level 6 programme is well structured and I have learnt a lot by attending. The skills I have learnt on the programme fit well with my role and I have been impressed with the training provider. They assist me greatly with university work as well as studying towards the IEng.

The programme is well structured. Each academic year starts in January and ends in June/July for exams. This allows all apprentices to spend the second half of the year to focus on work based learning and develop skills further. I have no faults with the training provider here.

Arup offer support to allow me to study for university in multiple different ways. They allow me to carry out off the job training (watching seminars, lectures, shadowing people etc) to develop further. They also allow time off for exams and some time off for coursework/revision. It is worth noting that a lot of work for university is to be done in your own time.

The training provider are very helpful with this and hold quarterly meetings with my employer. They provide feedback, recommended times we should spend on assignments, study sessions and are generally helpful with learning.

The training course is well suited to my role and I am able to understand the background to some of the things I am carrying out within the workplace. I have used a lot of my knowledge from university within my day to day role and would infact like to use more.

There used to be a lot of social committees at work however this has slowed down a lot since covid. Hopefully this will pick back up again when we move to our new office in Birmingham. Attending university has allowed me to socialise with multiple apprentices from different companies which also work nearby. I have done lots of social activities with them. For me, this is one of the main benefits of doing the degree apprenticeship and staying on campus.

Working at Arup comes with many benefits. It has a great annual leave policy, profit share and multiple other benefits. It is also a friendly place to work and people will always spend time with you if you ask. Factoring this with studying for my degree and being in no debt afterwards is ideal.

If you are entering Arup applying for an apprenticeship I would focus on being yourself and letting your personality shine through. Doing extra curricular activities helps and an interest in STEM, understanding of the industry and Arup in general will also be of benefit. Try and gain work experience and look into some of the software's we use within the industry. (MicroStation/Revit).
