I create measured building surveys by scanning buildings using a scanner. The collected data is used to recreate those buildings accurately in Revit. This model will have floors windows walls and accurate levels as well as a topography. Recently my day to day has increased and I do structural surveys now.
I have learned a lot of skills like the ability to use Revit and developed my IT skills. I have also improved my social skills and employability skills. I have been learning how a business works and how to deal with clients. My drawing and manual skills have also developed.
I enjoy my programme because i get to see other surveying careers and meet people that think alike. The programme teaches me about things i have never knew about and shows me what to research to further develop myself. The lecturers have a lot of knowledge on their areas of expertise and can convey them well.
The programme isn't organised and could be improved. It seems like the university does not keep apprentices in the loop and there are things being found out too late. Confusion on submission drop ins is an issue and we are not told sometimes.
My employer gives me enough support with my job and university, and answers any questions that I have on topics when writing essays although I am encouraged to do my own research on topics to improve my skills. Although whenever I am stuck they help me. Overall, I am getting enough support.
The training provider gives a lot of support in forms of lecturers and abundant library service that provides any book that is required. The university also provides a lot of guides and sends emails about events that may interest people. The university also provides really good facilities to study in.
The qualification gives me awareness of things that I have not known before, especially in law. The qualification has made me aware of hazards that I did not know I would have to watch out for. The qualification has not been as relevant skill wise in my field of surveying yet but may be in the future.
There are not many extra curricular activities that I can get involved with at my workplace. There are however networking events that can be attended, seminars where people teach what they have learned in my field as well as expos to promote my companies services that my workplace does.
Yes
The company is small and working there feels like being in a big family. The owner really pushes for innovation and always find new and better ways to do things. I am happy that I am trained by these professionals because they know what they are doing and how to do it better than majority of the industry.
Have an open mind and make sure to get a lot of information and training. Get some experience in using computers. Do not bother people constantly and try to use your initiative to figure things out. Try and be social with people when they are not doing much and just be normal.
