My role at this company includes carrying out various types of surveys and building inspections. From day to day I am tasked with completing tender documentation for various re-roofing, window and fire risk assessment schemes. These include CAD Drawings, Schedule of Works etc. I complete these projects with assistance from senior members of the team.
Since being on my apprenticeship course I have gained a plethora of new skills. Unfortunately, there are a number of companies that will offer to put you through this course and provide no relevant work that helps reinforce what you learn in your studies. Fortunately, since being at Concertus I have managed to develop skills learned on my University course and put them to real world use.
There have been several enjoyable modules throughout this programme, some that I was not expecting to enjoy as much as I did. We've had a number of engaging tutors throughout my 4 years on this course, and modules such as Building Design Project and Heritage and Conservation have been very interesting. I have also managed to utilise my skills in Revit which I enjoyed.
Communication could be improved for the apprentices, we are often told what day we return to Uni at year start a few days before we need to be in Uni. As for the rest of it we do feel a bit second fiddle to the full time students, however the teaching and assignments normally goes smoothly
Members of my team at work are always available to answer any queries I have regarding my degree and to further explain any concepts I may not have grasped yet from my studies. If I talk to them regarding an upcoming assignment they will offer talking points and source material for me to research
It is mainly just lectures and reading material. Tutors also make themselves available for 1 to 1 sessions so we can float ideas we have for the coursework, the may even offer advice on how to choose a building to analyse for a project. In the past they have also taken us on site visits
It helps me get the theory down but I have often found that things are a lot more complex and nuanced in practice. Also as mentioned before, it wasn't until the end of my 3rd year that I worked in a company that does Building Surveying so a lot of information I learned in the first few years didn't get put to use.
Not really, there are the odd meals and social events.
Yes
Offer great flexibility and support throughout their studies. I believe there are works in place to get this company moving in the right direction and all the staff are friendly. Management respect me as a Trainee and don't try to offload small tasks on me that do not aid with my progression.
I am not sure I am best to advise on this.
