My role at Mott MacDonald is I am a civil engineering apprentice currently in the highway team. I also take part in helping work experience. Currently on my day to day basis it involves me working on civil 3D a form of CAD and producing drawings for the project i am currently working on. I am given a 'mark-up' and I amend the comments I am given.
I have learnt how to confidently do CAD. I am now able to produce drawings to a higher standard then when i first joined. I have also learnt more about the process that goes into a construction project and how thing like budgets are work. I have widened my knowledge on the industry.
I find the college side of my programme can get quite repetitive and boring however I more much enjoy the work side of my apprenticeship. it is an overall very positive experience. it can get stressful at times however the correct support is around me so that i can work through this.
The college programme is well structured in terms of how it is layed out and how assignments are spread throughout the year. the only problem with the structure of my education is it is delivered on a Monday meaning I miss a lot of days due to bank holidays and inset days.
My employer supports me very well. I have never felt that I have not been provided the support I should. They are very accommodating and understand my needs. If I am ill they prioritise me getting better over me working and care for me. they also do reviews to check how we feel about the work we are doing and our overall enjoyment.
My training provider has set reviews where I am able to go through my portfolio and my progress. My college assessor is very good at helping me know what I need to start to do and what I am doing correctly already. He helps highlight the areas I need to improve on to ensure I pass.
I believe that the work I do at college and the work I do in my actual job can be quite separate. It may be due to the fact that I have not reached the section of the college course relevant to my specific job yet but currently, the work quite often does not seem relevant.
I am the Birmingham work experience ECP lead meaning that I am in charge of organising work experience in the Birmingham office. I also take port in some of the sports and social activities and have attended quiz nights and I regularly attend football after work on a weekly basis.
