  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • typical day starts with checking my emails and sending responses to the emails that require a response. I then meet with the senior quantity surveyor who I work under for tasks that I need to complete on the day. I work on site so I will go out once a day and get a general overview of the progress that has been made.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the flexibility of my program, and I enjoy the support that is given to me from my workplace and the university. The facilities are excellent and there are never any issues with online databases/software's. The work is challenging, and some of it relates to what I do on a day to day basis.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is structured very well, it is broken down into segments which makes it easier to understand what you need to focus on in the coming months/term. There are also scheduled sessions which explain what is required with regards to the APC, which gives us knowledge on it before we even start.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a large amount of support from my employer, they are very helpful and supportive if you have any issues or are unsure of certain things. There are always opportunities to advance your knowledge in multiple areas providing us with CPD seminar sessions or onsite information. This is normally done towards the end of projects to see which mistakes have been made and where to learn from.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university provides a lot of support and when you look on the online learning platform there are many places where you can go to if you are having issues, the tutors are very good at replying to emails and are always supportive in the seminar and lecture sessions held.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The majority of my experience and skills have come from within the industry. This is where I have been exposed to the real world of working and balancing it with limited free time. Even though the course is specially developed by many ex industry lecturers, there are only certain modules that actually teach you about the real working life.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I have been involved in many extra curricular activities with my employer. This includes careers events, being involved with three cricket matches and team building curry nights. Bowmer and Kirkland are very good at getting involved in extra curricular activities or hosting them themselves. The most recent event done was at a school near one of our projects.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Bowmer & Kirkland to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are very friendly and welcoming, and give you all the support you require. They offer many different job opportunities, including quantity surveying apprenticeships, design management apprenticeships, site engineering apprenticeships and estimating apprenticeships. As the company is so big, there is also lot of other opportunities in the different departments.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Bowmer & Kirkland?
  • They need to be interested in the role and ensure that they will be committed to learn. I applied through already knowing the company because I had been on a site tour, so if you have any contacts that already work for the company they can help you. Already being exposed to the roll also helps
