  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as a kitchen skills trainer is to provide quality training for our pub teams across the country. We roll out new menu training and also a lot of skills based training on all things like safety standards, eho safety. We also get involved with induction programs for head chefs and also general managers that are new into marstons

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I’m so privileged to have started my apprenticeship at an early stage in my career as a skills trainer as this has helped me look at L&D as a whole. Looking at the training cycle, LNA process and how neuroscience plays a part is really interesting for me.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I’m able to put a lot of the theory into practice as in my role I’m able to deliver that training and also to review and reflect. Also being able to gain feedback from delegates is such an advantage for the progression on project work. The residential I did also helped me with the comfort zone piece.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Very well organised and being strict with my apprenticeship time is a key part to my progress. Having other people in the training team either completing or completed an apprenticeship really helps me to have that support. Some of the work on bud can be overwhelming as when is shows in red it feels like I’m falling behind so has a negative impact on my mental wellbeing.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Absolutely fantastic support, there is a large amount of people who have said that they’ve done apprenticeships and have been open to help and support. Having a large L&D team is amazingly important and helpful to have conversations for reference and support. Being open to have conversations if you are struggling.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Always use the opportunity to speak with anyone in Crosby for support and on my progress reviews I’ve always found it best to be honest as it gives a true reflection. Support from my line manager has helped me to manage my workload and apprenticeship time in the best way.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel I see the whole picture of being in a professional L&D role. Supporting pub teams is my goal and providing relevant and meaningful training is what it’s all about. Being able to do the apprenticeship alongside doing the role helps me implement some of the learning theories and techniques.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are loads of networking events which now seem to happen a lot at our new head office in Wolverhampton. I would say that there isn’t much around sports teams which is something I would probably be interested in. This would help with professional development and also make a better understanding of what other departments goals are.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Marston's to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • For me the career pathway has been amazing and really helped me to see my vision of where I want to be. With great support from my general manager and a team managers I was able to spend time with the relevant people which in turn helped my to be successful in becoming a skills trainer.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Marston's?
  • Be clear from the start of what goals you want to accomplish, always be honest in conversation and as for feedback on how you could improve or what could have been done differently. Talk to people from different departments or groups of people who have been doing the job’s your interested in doing.
