I am a room senior in the baby room of a nursery. My role is to ensure the staff are deployed around the room and are creating a good environment for the children to learn and grow, I ensure this is done through planning and observations. I organise outings for the babies and carry out risk assessments. I also carry out home visits and meetings for new babies that are starting in the setting.
I have learnt a lot of new knowledge and skills. Including learning how to carry out risk assessments for outings. I have gained confidence within myself being a senior as I have gained experiences including carrying out one to one's eoth staff which is something I had never done before. I have also gained IT skills through learning how to do things on the computer, for example booking teams meetings through emails.
The programme has allowed me to learn new knowledge and skills that I have been able to use within my work environment. I enjoy learning new things during my live lessons, the lessons are delivered in a way which are interesting and we have discussions about scenarios in our work places which allows the learning to be fun.
The programme is very organised and structured, before starting my level 5 qualification I had a zoom call carrying out a pre-enrolment and enrolment this gave me a good understanding of what I was going to be doing during the course and what was expected of me. The onefile allows me to see all my work on one place and is very organised.
My employer is very supportive, I can easily go to her anytime and she will always listen and try and help me. I find myself popping into the office at least 2 to 3 times a day to ask questions or ask for help and she always makes the time. My employer has been supportive of my apprenticeship by adding me to a group chat where she puts research pages and other learning content in.
The training provider is very supportive and has supported me a lot during working towards my qualification, we have regular one to one's to discuss how I'm getting on and come up with targets to support my professional development. If I was stuck on any of my work and needed help I could email my assessor and she would always get in contact to book a call to support me.
I feel I have definetly improved as a room senior since starting my qualification, I have learnt new knowledge and skills that have allowed me to develop as a senior. The live lessons are a great way of learning things that I can use within my role and discussing ideas with others doing the course that I van bring back to the setting.
In my setting we have a welfare pot which the managers plan trips or events for staff to team build and also to show appreciation for our hard work. We have regular staff meetings once a month to discuss the settings policies and what we can do to improve in our setting and we also have access to join training.
Yes
I would recommend Footsteps to both people looking for a job or an apprenticeship and people looking to find a childcare setting for their child. Being a staff at footsteps is a very rewarding job and the company provides opportunities for progression. I would recommend to a friend planning on sending their child to nursery as children are provided with an enabling environment with meaningful interactions.
If I was to give advise to someone applying to footsteps nursery I would explain the importance of the interactions with the children and how it is always important to have a child centred pedagogical approach. I would also discuss how children need time to bond, in my experience I have seen people get disheartened because a child didn't want to play with them because they didn't know them, I would explain it sometimes takes time for them to feel confident and comfortable around someone new.
