  • My daily role consists of monitoring the the various devices that we have in the building and helping with any resets, maintenance and software updates that they require. • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • When I started with LM I had good IT skills but had not worked in an engineering environment before. During my time on the apprenticeship I have gained hardware faultfinding skills, soldering skills, project management and work documentation skills. I have also developed my IT skills from general computer usage to being able to administer windows computer networks.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my time at work a lot. Each day brings new challenges and a chance to learn more about engineering and simulation. It is difficult to think of a day where I haven't learned something new or applied lessons from previous experience to solve an issue. I also enjoy the team that I work with knowing that they have my back.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program that I can pursuing had a rough start due to Covid-19, it necessitated distance learning which wasn't great when a lot of the initial classes were to do with machining. Having come through that though the rest of my time in the courses at college have gone brilliantly, the lessons all build on each other and give me a better understanding of tasks at work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive plenty of support in the form of the team in the office and my manager, they encourage questions and don't hesitate to explain processes or lend a hand if I am struggling with a task. The in-house documentation that is available is also excellent and easy to understand.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As I am on a day release program for college classes I get all the support I need within the lesson time and from tutors by email if I have questions. My assessor is also great and pushes me to keep on task, submit work for review and find other examples of my work to evidence my progress.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Given that I started the job with no engineering qualifications at all, I feel that the one that a receive at the end of my apprenticeship will help greatly and show how far I have come from the start of the program. I feel that the knowledge I have gained along with the experience of working while learning has lead to better performance in my role.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Lockheed Martin to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I believe it is a great company to work for, they offer a good work environment with plenty of support for people just starting out in engineering and simulation. Every manager that I have met has been friendly and answered any questions that I had regarding the organization. Overall its the best company I've worked for.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Lockheed Martin?
  • Don't be afraid to apply for an apprenticeship with LM, if you show willingness to work and are ready to apply yourself to the job you will go far. If an opportunity to do work like a demo or a social event, take it. They are great networking moments and can open further doors to you.
