I was educated on engineering as a career at Siemens. I took part in a virtual aeroplane building programme that taught me the physics behind the manufacturing of aircrafts. I also made my own poster on a topic relating to the new topics I learnt during this experience.
I covered a lot of field in engineering, from software engineering to mechanical engineering in planes which helped me to identify which field I would like to specialise in. I also developed skills in applying my new knowledge to physics in the aircraft programme project and to designing an aesthetic poster.
I really enjoyed my virtual experience because I learnt a lot of new things about engineering and the company which improved my knowledge in physics in general. Furthermore, I really enjoyed the aircraft project and poster making because I like designing and creating new content on topics that interest me.
My virtual experience was organised into sections and subsections which allowed me to track my progress and to make sure I got everything done in time. This helped me manage my time and organise the information that I had learned as well as the videos that summarised each section.
I learnt about the different fields of Engineering in working in Siemens and how it contributes to the global issues today. However, I wish I could have had a more in-depth overview of how it would be like to work there. There were lots of videos on people working at Simmons and sharing their experience which was insightful.
Before this experience, I was not exactly sure on whether I should do engineering as a university course or apprenticeship, however after the virtual experience I feel more confident in my decision of going into engineering because I feel more knowledgeable about engineering and have some idea on what it be like working in a company.
I was not paid for this experience at all. It was a free virtual work experience to experience the career of Engineering for people interested in engineering. And I did this experience to decide whether I think engineering is a good career path for me.
There were only live meetings with employees but it wasn't one-on-one. I could ask questions about the company and engineering, but it wasn't exactly networking and sometimes since there were many people on the live, your questions wouldn't be answered. So there weren't as many opportunities for networking.
Yes
I would recommend this virtual experience to anyone who is looking to study engineering as I think this experience gives you a good insight on what it's like working in a company for engineering. Overall, the programme is very fun and insightful. I think it will be very beneficial to someone looking into engineering.
I would advise that they show a great interest in engineering and that they manage their time effectively so that you are able to complete the whole programme to receive the certificate and also learn from it. It's important to take in all the information that you'd learn as it's beneficial to the field of Engineering.
