My role was within the Centre of Excellence which is an audit business unit that looks at specific, more complex financial statement line items. My role involved the audit of the pension line items. Day-to-day we work on multiple engagements, completing testing in order to conclude that area of the financial statements are fairly and accurately represented. This involves communication with clients and third parties, through emails and video calls, and working within a team to complete the file.
I have learnt many new skills during my time on placement, not only developing my technical knowledge but also enhancing more transferable skills such as communication. Having insight as to what it is like to work at a big four firm has been a great opportunity and has provided coaching from very talented and knowledgeable people.
The programme is enjoyable as it gives an opportunity to combine the university experience with practical working experience. Although this creates an intense course, the hard work definitely pays off, as having the opportunity to work for four months is so valuable. This combination aids development and gives a sense of pride to what we are achieving, which makes it more enjoyable.
The programme overall is well structured with the balance of studying and working. Having the placement after completing all exams for the year meant we could fully immerse ourselves in work and not have to think about revision during that time, although this does make the second semester much shorter and tougher.
While on placement we receive a lot of support. We have career coaches and buddies to help guide us and answer any questions we may have. We also have flying start champions who are great to contact with any issues we may face. Also the teams we work in are supportive of each other and create a strong learning environment. We have less regular check ins while at university but the support is still there if needed.
The ICAEW provide the university with resources that are really helpful for learning the content, these are used by lecturers who are available to answer questions and teach us the content. The shorter second semester is considered by some lecturers who try to give us access to materials earlier to make that period less stressful.
The qualification definitely aids us in our roles as auditors as becoming accountants helps to develop our knowledge of the way businesses operate and how important the reliance on financial statements is. We are also taught the importance of ethics and how we are expected to act in our roles which is helpful to consider while working.
There are plenty of social activities to be involved in. Even without joining any specific clubs we are included in social office events such as lunches and volunteering/charity days. This really helped us get to know the other people in the office and gave us chance to be included and valued members of the team.

I would recommend PwC to a friend as they are not only a well respected firm who you can a lot from, but also have created a great, safe environment to learn and work in. They provide us with so many great opportunities to develop as young professionals starting out on their careers.
The tips I would give are to be passionate about what you are applying for and show what a great candidate you are for the role. You need to be aware of the current issues facing the firm and what they are doing in response. Most importantly be yourself and show how you have the qualities they are looking for, they are happy to teach you technical skills but want to employee people who fit their culture.
