I attended a three day work experience which helped me build new connections and ask a variety of questions to legal experts. We were introduced to legislation, giving us an opportunity to make our own at the end with our own task. There were a lot of group led exercises related to the legal sector and the work undertaken at a commercial law firm.
I learn how to draft my own legislation, also learnt how to work collaboratively in order to create an argument on the Jaffa Cake case which was filed by HMRC. This was really useful as it helped develop my debating skills and problem-solving as it led me to think out of the box.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this work experience as it provided me to the opportunity to connect with a wide range of legal professionals. I was also able to gain more knowledge about the solicitor apprenticeship route into law which was something I have not previously come across. This has been an enjoyable experience!
It was really organised as the platform we used was Forage and there was a set schedule for each day making it accessible with clear times and when the sessions would be held. It was easy to access documents which would be required by the session! Our supervisor was very organised and made sure we were all doing well and had not technical issues!
I learnt so much about the culture and the different offices around the UK. We were able to hear from employees from Edinburgh and London and their different routes into law and what position they currently hold. I also learnt how different offices operate and their was a larger number of people who work at the London office than the Edinburgh one.
This work experience was really useful in cementing my understanding of law and it has inspired me to become a solicitor. It was really useful in knowing the different routes into law and how you can undertake a degree and convert to a law degree after your undergraduate degree. This work experience has really motivated me!
I was not paid for this work experience as it took place online using the Forage and Microsoft teams. This was great as it meant I did not have to travel! We are also invited for an open day at Pinsent Masons in their London office which will be an exciting opportunity.
We were able to attend a lunch session which allowed us to connect to a wide range of other students! It was interesting to see that most of us were year 12, however there were a large number of students who were on their gap year. On forage it also gave us an opportunity to speak to anyone that was part of our work experience.
Yes
It was an amazing opportunity to learn about becoming a solicitor and gaining tips about CV, training contract and gaining work experience in general. I enjoyed taking part in the interactive sessions and being able to connect with a range of people as we were all from different parts of the country.
my advice would be that you just need to be yourself. Pinsent masons is very inclusive and all the solicitors were very welcoming and friendly and interested in getting to know about us and giving their honest advice! Also to make sure you include volunteering and any work experience you have done, as one of the solicitors mentioned, every work experience is useful as you are learning transferable skills from each one.
