I am an Electrical and Instrumentation gas apprentice working on instruments at a Gas Terminal. I have to do a site related project for college. I have only just started this and will take a while to complete.
Coming straight from school into the apprenticeship, I have found that being in a more grown up environment and working with qualified people has allowed me to become more mature. I have gained a lot of knowledge of the plant and how a lot of things work onsite.
I love being onsite! Working with the team onsite is the best part of the apprenticeship. However, all the company courses and college courses are done over 400 miles from my home. I therefore have to travel a lot which takes up quite a bit of my weekend and can effect my personal life.
You get a lot of feedback from trainers and managers. If you have done well you are appropriately praised for it.
The programme changes from time to time which can mess everyone around. Also the blocks of time onsite vs the time on college could be better mixed so that you are not having a huge chunk on site followed by a huge chunk at college.
Trainers and tutors provide appropriate feedback.
Onsite you are well supported by your team and are not seen as a hassle for them to look after. Your contribution is appreciated.
Travel costs are all paid for and it must be one of the highest paid apprenticships in the country. The living cost of where I live is a higher than the rest of the country so a little extra cash would be nice.
You are invited to many company events, but they are hundreds of miles from you. The team onsite are very good at organising nights out to socialise with one another off job, and also to celebrate events such as Christmas.
Yes
Overall a very good apprenticeship.
Do some research about the company and ask someone who works for them what they do etc.
