  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a customer team member so I range from being on the till helping customers, to putting out stock, to helping customer enquiries. I answer phones and I am training to be a manager. I can open the store and can close. I help to train new starters and learning to do the job above me as well.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • While I already had phone skills, working here has made me more confident in answering the phone. I gained knowledge in all areas to do with plumbing and guttering. I have had zero product knowledge before I started this job but now that has increased. I was already a manager before but I have learnt new processes and different ways of doing things than previously.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the different aspects of the learning and how it pushes me to do more and think more deeply about everything that I do. Normally there is the normal level of thinking and then you just get on with it but with this it requires all the extras that go with it. I enjoy that I have to think more.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Every month I have a review with my tutor and we go over everything that I have done that month, we talk about the extra jobs I have been doing and how that impacts my current job and how it will help me moving forward. I can contact my tutor whenever via email and message and will get a response within a few days unless off on holiday. So far it has been okay.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer carves out time for me to learn extra items, they find extra things for me to do and wait to show me anything that could help me and go towards my learning. They are always available if I am struggling and go out of their way. My manager has been very helpful.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I already have my maths and english qualifications so it is just a refresh on old topics and going over everything. I have gone through everything that I wasn't very high on and revised it, I have voiced my concerns over how to revision and the questions do not always add up and I have had to search outside of the revision given. Also the revision is always the easiest examples and then the questions seem to be 7 levels above so having that looked would be helpful for future learners.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It helps me to perform better because it makes me think more about what i am doing and how it can impact my job and those around me. I learn more deeply instead of face value information. As I am learning up on my role this will help when I am promoted.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately there isn't any extra curricular activities like sports teams otherwise I would definitely join those, there are professional network events however they are tailored to specific job titles and specific people can go. They have events for their kitchens and bathrooms and they learn all about the new products.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Wickes to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Enjoy the people that I work with and for, I like what Wickes stand for and the extras that they do. They do lots for pride, black history month, LGBTQ+ and lots more. I like that the company does a lot and that our company does a lot for charity and that recycling is high up on their importants list.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wickes?
  • Make sure that you are a team player, everyone helps each other out which is nice. Brush up on customer service but make sure that you are yourself. Wickes values each individual as who they are and they like to celebrate the person. Be open and honest and have an understanding of what Wickes do.
