  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work in teams of varying size, from just 2 all the way up to around 12. We audit companies of vary size and essentially ensure the figures in their financial statements are correct. Through things like conversing with the client, obtaining evidence, testing assumptions and more. Work can be varied dependent on the type of clients and accounts you work on

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I am entering my 4th year now and my people management skills have improved every year. Both in terms of the client facing side of the business and the team management side. On certain jobs i will be one of the more senior staff and have to coach and instruct staff which is something i wouldnt have been able to do a few years ago.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is majority work, then the occasional week or two of college, then revising in the evenings on the build up to exams while working. The college is intense but not overly stressful, the work i would describe the same. However when mixing full time work with revising in the evenings it is very stessful and time consuming

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • From a college perspective it is highly organised and structured, with dedicated support teams and tutors assigned to you, it is always clear when and where your lessons will be and more. From an apprenticeship side there appears to be a lack of communication between work and the provider. This can result in issues or errors occurring when booking college days etc.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Other members of the team are always highly accomodating, as everyone you work with has passed a similar qualification they understand how hard it is and that you need to be supported, so they are always fine for you to prioritise study as long as work performance does not suffer greatly. I believe we could do with more assistance in terms of time off when studying for exams so i do not have to use annual leave to revise

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The training provider is excellent and have a variety of services. The tutors are always helpful and respond very quickly when emailing questions. They also have dedicated question lines where you can email issues with the course and they will respond within hours most of the time. The materials are usually useful and good quality

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe it somewhat helps. It gives a better understanding of accounting entries and preparing accounts. However as an auditor i do not really prepare the accounts and certain aspects of the qualification are not entirely relevant such as the law course. However as i have got through my qualification the additional knowledge is always useful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are absolutely loads of activities to participate in. Most activities are open to all except the womens only netball team. We have a weekly football session and a monthly corporate football league, a cricket team and a recently formed raqcuet ball club. Things like drink socials and more are a regular occurence also

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The programme is a great way to get experience in the working world, participate in socials and network with others, keep fit through the sport activities, get paid and get a qualification without getting any debt. Of course there are cons such as the issues with revisng and work and work being busy at times but in general i would recommend EY

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Be yourself is the main advice. Grades are not the all important decider and being yourself is what the recruiters are interested in. They want to invest in you as a hard worker, a willing tryer and eager to learn. You should also make sure to set firm boundaries at work for things like revision of family events in the evenings.
