  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I assist the tax team with admin and client related matters, e.g. invoicing, gathering summaries of tax law etc. I attend weekly team meetings, spend time understanding the business and various clients. I also spend a great deal of time in college and studying for professional qualifications which can be challenging.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new Excel skills, how to use internal platforms/processes and also developed confidence in my networking skills. I have learnt a huge amount of new skills in terms of taking the professional qualifications in order to become a chartered accountant. These skills range from financial accounting to management information and technology.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy going to work each day and the people I have met. I enjoy all the varied modules that I am studying for towards my professional chartered accountancy qualification, particularly business acumen, finance and management information and technology. I have enjoyed meeting lots of different people from different service lines whilst at college.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of my programme is reasonably well organised, since it is a clear cut three year grad scheme. In the first year, the first few months are spent in college, before starting to work in the office. Time is then split between college and exams, and we stay in one desk or dept for the whole 3 years.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer does provide support in terms of induction days and some training before starting in the workplace. My colleagues and managers are also very supportive when they can be. However, as everyone is very busy it can often be hard to make time for supporting new grads and often I do feel left to my own devices.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider does not provide much support in my opinion, and the quality of the teaching is very low. I have found it to be a waste of time going into classes as the teaching is poor and my questions are not answered. The tutors rush through the content and I am more productive at home by myself.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my qualification is useful for my role, since I am learning new accounting and tax content and laws that I was not aware of before. However, I feel that we learn a lot of irrelevant things which are tested in exams, and I am very unimpressed that we take Scottish rather than English exams despite being based in London.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are many extra curricular activities to get involved with through the EY network, ranging from social and cultural groups to sports and neurodiverity groups. There is a badminton group and tennis group which I have attended. However, I feel that the cultural group for East Asians is lacking.

  • 9a. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • EY is world famous and a great place to start one's career for one's CV. You learn a lot and the people are friendly.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to EY?
  • Just be yourself!
