As a first-year, I have performed testing of financial information through gathering audit evidence and documenting audit procedures in engagements. I often collaborate with my team to identify and resolve client issues, while learning about EY's methodologies and procedures.
I've developed robust Excel skills for data management and analysis. I've also honed my communication skills through regular interaction with clients and my team, managing expectations and resolving issues. Furthermore, my teamwork and collaboration abilities have improved, as we work collectively to meet deadlines.
I enjoy the camaraderie of working alongside numerous graduates at EY and appreciate the kindness of my colleagues. Working for such a prestigious company is gratifying. However, the repetitive nature of tasks and the intense busyness during peak seasons can be overwhelming. The lack of clarity in task explanation occasionally impedes effective coaching.
The programme is well structured as I work/ gain industry experience alongside studying to become a qualified chartered accountant during the 3 years.
We receive support with exams, and are given the chance to defer or retake them when necessary. The exams can be intense as there is a lot of content to learn in such a short period of time. We do have a counsellor, coach and buddy system, so there are many people we can go to for support. However, it is not always clear what we need to do as part of the apprenticeship and can be a bit disorganised.
We receive adequate support from our tutors through in-person/online college, online forums, e-mails, mock exams and drop-in calls. Feedback and marking of our mocks could be improved as well as the provision of example answers.
I think it is useful for a base knowledge and understanding of accounting, however, the majority will be learned through experience in the industry as we often forget what we learn in college since there is not enough time to fully understand or remember everything we are taught.
