  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • In my role as a trainee merchandiser i check dialy sales and update sheets on sales, stock, ecom, volume lines, shipping approvals and intake. I contact suppliers and raise orders for the upcoming meeting. I also have meetings with the stock placement team, ecom team and my team for jobs that need to be done in the week and critical path.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt many skills since starting this role. My confidence has grown from presenting and talking to lots of people each day. My excel skills have also advanced in line with my maths.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme lessons take place every other week with the Fashion Retail Academy. I really enjoy my lessons whether that face-to-face or online. I learn a lot about a buyer and a merchandiser and i am then able to take it back with me and use my knowledge in work. It is also good to hear about other people in my position and what they do in the company they work for.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structed and everything is very clear. We knew the dates and times of each lesson from the very start and we also have a good amount of time to complete the assessments they set as they know we are working too, but Matalan give time to complete them in the working day.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Matalan are very good with supporting us and making sure that we are enjoying working and our lessons. My team are extra supportive and give me help and advise on assessments and will always answer any questions or queries i have to better my self and make sure i learn something new each day.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The Fashion Retail Academy are very understanding that we work full time and give us plenty of time to complete work. They like to give everyone an opportunity in lessons to answer or ask questions and are always around on email if you need them.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like my qualification is going well. My provider is always there to help and teaches us a lot about the job we are doing, which is great as you can take back to work what you have learnt.

  • In work, there are social activities that you can get involved in yes.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Matalan is an enjoyable place to work with lots of different things happening around the office. A benefit is also being able to work from home 2 days a week which helps if you travel far. Matalan always want you to better yourself and there is always an option to progress and be promoted within the business.

  • When applying, you need to be confident, know a bit about the business and speak about your successes.
