I am an Apprentice Quantity surveyor. My day to day role involves shadowing the senior QS in meetings and discussions. It also involves carrying out tasks such as the carbon calculator log and subcontract payment assessments. I have also been going out to site frequently with the engineers to help gain a better understanding of what is actually happening on site which will help my technical knowledge.
I have learnt many new skills within Excel, which is one of the main tools for a QS. I have also developed better knowledge regarding civil engineering and the plant and materials used.
I really enjoy the programme as it is a great opportunity to experience college life and work life. Meeting new people, developing new skills and opening career doors whilst earning.
The programme has been well structured in the sense of knowing when and where I need to be and everything has run very smoothly with the transitions between college and being on site.
I receive great support as any concerns or questions I have, I receive a response almost immediately which tries to help me out in the best way possible.
A good level of support was shown from my training provider with tutors going above and beyond, arranging calls outside of college time to support us to ensure that we get the qualifications we need.
I feel like the qualification helps me in my role as it teaches us the technical side of being a QS and gives us the knowledge to take onto site and put into real life scenarios.
Yes, there are many social events and networking events at work that are fully funded by the company. I have been to a couple and have thoroughly enjoyed these.
