I worked in the tax department shadowing different people of different positions within the department. I was able to interact with people of all positions from summer interns to partners. I was given responsibilities such as checking over tax balance sheets, creating presentations and creating company profiles as well as various skills building activities.
Presentation skills development was a massive part of the programme and I learnt about many different ways to present, both interactively and orally. I also improved on my business writing skills, particularly using Microsoft Office. During the programme I learnt the importance of being able to interact with others and network.
I enjoyed the programme because it was varied and instead of just shadowing and completing menial jobs I felt like a part of the organisation. The company emphasised the importance of the people of the organisation and did their best to make me feel involved. It was a very enjoyable experience overall.
I felt involved in tasks within the firm, even though I was only a part for a short period of time. The fact that senior people took the time to give me tasks made me feel valued.
The first week of the programme served as an induction and it became slightly repetitive. I would've liked to have done more skills building activities in the first week rather than waiting until the second. The final business week was well structured and I was aware of what it entailed.
I was told to come to my mentor/buddy with any queries and they were very helpful.
Being on work experience, I was encouraged to ask about anything and I was given a buddy in my department and a mentor to communicate with, not necessarily in that department. People in general were more than happy to help.
