I work within a team of Software Engineers for cloud based systems, specifically AWS and Azure. We operate in Sprint periods of 2 weeks that have PBIs for us to complete before the end of said sprint. This can range from a variety of things. Requests from stakeholders, bug fixes, updates, new applications. Each of them is assigned a value that determines importance of the PBI.
I have both learnt and developed new skills within this job role. Going into it I had prior experience with programming languages but since starting, I have learnt both new languages and improved upon my existing knowledge of languages. As for entirely new skills, since starting I have learnt about DevOps tooling and infrastructure which were both new concepts to me.
I enjoy the programme a lot, I find the work extremely engaging and challenging which means I feel rewarded in my efforts when I am successful with completing tasks. The challenge provided really forces me to go outside of what I already know and to develop new perspectives with any task I undertake.
The program is relatively well structured, I find it useful to give me an initial push in the right direction of my learning without just giving me all the answers with no input from me required. I also find that the programmes teachings coincide well with the tasks that I have at work so I never feel lost in what I should be doing.
I receive a considerable amount of support from my employer in a number of aspects. My manager is there if I have any concerns or problems in general and my team has organised multiple sessions to go through things I don't fully understand as well as answer any questions I have regarding the more technical aspects.
The training provider also provides support when working towards my qualifications through a variety of means. I have classrooms provided by them for each of the key aspects of DevOps in order to get a base understanding of each of the areas it entails as well as having a dedicated mentor who helps me with any questions I have regarding assignments or the general areas of the course.
I feel that it helps to give me the necessary tools and understanding to kickstart my learning with the different areas it covers. And while it can't give me the information on how my company and role may use something specifically it can give me the basics I need to be able to understand the fundamentals and then adapt it to how my company may use it.
There are regular events set up at work in regards to both social activities and networking events that get sent out via communications if its pertaining to the wider business and emails/messages on teams regarding events contained within the team/department.
Yes
The company has been extremely supportive with my development within the apprenticeship and I have found that the atmosphere within the company is also extremely pleasant. They have offered nothing but support to me during my time here and I find myself more engaged with my work than I have elsewhere.
Be engaged with what you do and show a desire to undertake whatever role you are applying for. The more passionate you are about it the more it comes across during the interviews.
